It all started in the late 70’s when my parents took us on a family river trip — dad, mom, the four brothers, and uncle George. Our budget was modest and the equipment was rough, but we were together, and we were beginning to build the foundations of great family river tradition.
Despite all the problems — broken axles, flat tires, overheated vehicles, splintered wood frames, heavy/low-quality rubber, young and rascally passengers — dad and mom persisted in taking us on trips. I was young enough to be completely useless as a helper, but I observed as dad repaired and made everything work with his ingenuitous mind. Observing provided all the lessons needed.
While in high school, in the mid 80’s, we took a low-water run through Desolation Canyon on the Green River. It was so bony, and our raft was so poor, that repairs were required daily. Watching my dad labor through that trip is the true inspiration for Terran the company. His passion for sharing with us the adventure and his grit amid exhaustion are the true seeds of my passion.
The drive for river adventure continues. Each year I try to take someone who has never been before so I can see the river through their eyes — a family, a scout troop, cousins, friends. I believe in sharing. I believe that everyone who loves the river should be able to enjoy the adventure with great gear. Gear that they love, that they trust, and that they can afford. That is what we are about: sharing the adventure by providing great gear.
Thanks Dad. Thanks for the tradition . . . for showing me how to endure . . . for sharing so much of you with all of us.
Catch you in a back eddy……
